Dead Cells Developer Motion Twin Says Ending Support Was a “Good Thing”

Motion Twin, the developer of 2018’s hit Metroidvania, Dead Cells, has told fans that its decision to end the game’s development in 2024 was not only the correct decision, but also the best for fans and the studio.

In a recent interview, Motion Twin developers Gwen Massé and Yannick Berthier revealed that the team felt it was the “end of an era” after Dead Cells was sunsetted in 2024, with the studio keen to move on to its next game, Windblown.

During a conversation with PCGamesN, the duo explained how Dead Cells has enabled the team to grow and pursue more ambitious projects, such as Windblown, which is currently in Early Access on Steam.

Why Motion Twin Ended Support

During the sit-down with PCGamesN, the Motion Twin devs explained that while the team had been “blessed” by the massive success of Dead Cells, it could now focus “100%” on Windblown without financial pressure.

Although fans may feel aggrieved at the decision, Massé says that “for us and the players,” Dead Cells is now the game the team “wanted to make at the beginning,” meaning the studio is content with where they left the roguelike.

Legacy

Dead Cells has been a runaway success for Motion Twin, with the game selling over 10 million copies since its launch in 2018. The success means the studio can move on and put what it has learned into its next title.

For fans, the legacy of Dead Cells will live on in Windblown, with Motion Twin pushing itself further than ever before, creating an “ambitious” co-op, action roguelike for 1-3 players.

What’s Next for Motion Twin

For Motion Twin, ceasing development and support for Dead Cells was not about giving up, but about moving forward and beginning a new chapter.

Windblown is currently in Early Access, and Motion Twin is using what it has learned from Dead Cells to create something it hopes fans will appreciate as development progresses towards 1.0.

Conclusion

Dead Cells developer Motion Twin says that moving away from Dead Cells is good for the studio and fans. The developer says it can concentrate fully on Windblown, its new co-op roguelike.
