Pixel Sundays: Little Nightmares – Nightmares in Childlike Form & the New Terror

The Little Nightmares franchise has been with us for over 8 years, releasing three games during that time. The series blends childlike innocence with nightmare aesthetics and platforming puzzles, creating a very unique horror atmosphere. Today, we’re exploring why this series is so fascinating.

Summary

With the release of Little Nightmares III, a new chapter of the franchise has just begun. That’s why we’re taking a look back at its past and talking about its present and future.

The Origins – Little Nightmares and the First Awakening

The first Little Nightmares was released in 2017. It was developed by the Swedish studio Tarsier Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The goal during development was to create a game that combines a claustrophobic atmosphere with childlike themes and nightmare aesthetics. According to Tarsier Studios, the game takes place “in a distorted place between dream and reality, where children face the horrors of the world alone.”

Little Nightmares puts you in the shoes of the small protagonist Six, who is trapped in a giant underwater facility known as The Maw. This place is full of monsters, oversized everyday objects, and constantly presents new disturbing situations. The game uses minimal dialogue or text, leaving much of its meaning open to interpretation and symbolism.

The gameplay combines platforming and puzzle elements with very limited combat or defense abilities. The focus is instead on stealth, evasion, and using the environment as a tool to stay hidden. Your character is extremely vulnerable, which helps create a tense atmosphere.

Little Nightmares approaches horror in a very unique way. Its visual and audio design builds an oppressive mood: oversized furniture and distorted monsters convey a constant feeling of smallness. Themes like childhood, fear, hunger, and loss of control are explored metaphorically. Six, for example, suffers from insatiable hunger, and fear is reflected in the gigantic scale of the world compared to her size.

With Little Nightmares, Tarsier Studios laid the stylistic and thematic foundation of the series. The game was well-received by critics and the community, especially praised for its atmosphere and art design. While the game is relatively short, its mood is unmatched.

Expansion & Deepening – Little Nightmares II and Interludes

On February 11, 2021, Little Nightmares II was released. The game was again developed by Tarsier Studios and published by Bandai Namco. This time, you play as Mono, a boy wearing a brown paper bag over his head, accompanied by Six, who we know from the first game. Six is controlled by the AI. Mono wakes up in a surreal, distorted world influenced by the Signal Tower. Together with Six, he tries to uncover the secrets of the world and escape. Along the way, they encounter Pale City and many different monsters.

Mechanically, the game builds on its predecessor. Puzzles and platforming remain central gameplay elements. However, Mono can now pick up or move objects and even fight smaller enemies. With two characters in play, a new dynamic emerges. Six assists Mono with certain puzzles and sequences, putting more emphasis on cooperation with your companion. This creates a unique mix of helplessness and connection.

Visually and atmospherically, the series was significantly expanded with Little Nightmares II. The environments in this game are far more diverse, featuring schools, hospitals, TV motifs, and more. Additionally, the design of enemies and rooms became even more disturbing and symbolic. A small example: on monotonous TV screens, you can see distorted children’s faces, and there are educational locations that have been transformed into horror settings.

The game greatly expanded the universe and deepened the lore. Thanks to the second installment, the franchise also became much more popular — the game sold over one million copies within a month. At the same time, it remained stylistically true to the series, and the atmosphere stayed the same: you are small, and the world feels threatening. Reviews for the game were quite mixed. The visual presentation and atmosphere were praised, but there was also criticism directed at new mechanics like combat, which some felt diluted the original concept.

Before the Big Step – Expectations, Change, and the Stage for Part III

The development of Little Nightmares III was taken over by Supermassive Games. Supermassive Games brings experience with horror and cooperative gameplay mechanics and is known for the Dark Pictures series. However, a change of developer always carries major risks, as game mechanics often change and the feel of the game can shift.

Since the previous title already featured two characters, players now hoped for a co-op mode — and that wish was granted. Players also wanted a larger, more connected world, but without losing the core identity. Naturally, they also want the quality of the game to remain on par with previous entries.

The game was officially announced for 2024. However, in May 2024, it was officially delayed to 2025. This delay was meant to ensure quality and meet the high expectations. The franchise is expected to grow with this new entry while still preserving the DNA of the original. Fans therefore hope for something big, but there remains a lingering concern that the familiar feeling of the original games might get lost.

Little Nightmares III – The Big Step Forward

Little Nightmares III was released on October 10, 2025 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC. For the first time in the series, players control two new child protagonistsLow and Alone. These two can be played in co-op by two people or solo with an AI companion. The story takes them through a mysterious world known as The Nowhere or The Spiral, where they try to find a way out. The game now focuses more on friendship, cooperation, and overcoming nightmares together.

This is also the first entry in the series to feature an online co-op mode. The second player can download the Friends Pass for free to join the game. Low and Alone each have unique tools/mechanics: Low wields a bow, while Alone uses a wrench. These are primarily used to solve puzzle elements. For example, the bow can cut ropes and trigger mechanisms. The game world is larger, offers more diverse environments, and emphasizes cooperation and branching level structures.

The stylistic core of the series remains intact. Players are still small and vulnerable in a giant, oppressive world. The blend of childlike imagery and horror, the symbolic storytelling, minimal text, and strong visual language are all still present. Little Nightmares III clearly shows that the franchise is evolving – not just technically, but also in terms of gameplay and narrative. The series aims to renew itself without losing its identity. Achieving this balance is difficult but necessary to keep the series fresh.

However, the reviews for the game are not very positive. On Steam, about a week after release, only 46% of players have given it a positive rating. Players criticize the game for having an incomplete story and too little content. The soundtrack has also received a lukewarm reception, and the slight shift in graphical style hasn’t been well received by most. There are also complaints about the large number of DLCs. Many feel that the first two games were better overall.

Future of the Little Nightmares Series

Little Nightmares III marks a clear turning point for the entire franchise. The new focus on co-op gameplay and two protagonists in a larger world is a significant shift. It still has its problems and is not perfectly executed, but these are lessons the developers can learn from. If Supermassive Games develops a fourth installment, they now know what needs more attention. And perhaps Tarsier Studios could even return for a future entry. Whether a successor will follow remains uncertain, as Little Nightmares III has received very mixed reviews.

Conclusion – Nightmares That Keep Growing

The Little Nightmares franchise has evolved over the past eight years from a small, stylistically unique horror project into a well-known brand that occupies a distinct niche in the genre with its mix of childlike innocence, nightmarish atmosphere, and symbolic depth. While the first game impressed with its minimalist storytelling and oppressive mood, the second game significantly expanded the universe but also sparked debates about new mechanics.

Little Nightmares

With Little Nightmares III, the series takes a bold step forward: co-op gameplay, two playable characters, and larger worlds show a desire to evolve without abandoning its identity. However, the transition is not without stumbling blocks – the mixed reviews and criticism of story, content, and DLC strategy demonstrate that not all innovations have resonated. Despite these weaknesses, one thing is clear: Little Nightmares stands at a crossroads. The series has the potential to return to its former strength in future installments – or even reinvent itself. Whether with Supermassive Games or a return of Tarsier Studios, the future of the nightmares remains uncertain but exciting.
