Right now, the game is completely free to play on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. While this free-to-play window is a limited-time event, after the free weekend wraps up, fans can snag the game for keeps during a massive series sale that also includes the frosty standalone sequel, Subnautica: Below Zero.
Subnautica Free Weekend & Series Sale
This is not a drill and it’s definitely not a leftover of April Fools. Unknown Worlds has officially announced that Subnautica is hosting a free-to-play weekend, and it’s already live on both Steam and the Epic Games Store. Players can jump in right now and explore the depths at no cost until April 6 at 9:59 AM PT / 12:59 PM ET / 4:59 PM GMT.
Even better, any progress made during the free weekend will carry over if you decide to purchase the full game. Just keep in mind that saves are tied to your platform and cannot be transferred between different systems.
While the free access ends with the weekend, players who want to continue their journey can do so at a steep discount. Both Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero are currently 75% off on Steam and the Epic Games Store. The sale runs from April 2, 10:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM GMT to April 9, 9:59 AM PT / 12:59 PM ET / 4:59 PM GMT on Steam. Over on the Epic Games Store, the sale began on March 31 and lasts until April 7, 8:00 AM PT / 11:00 AM ET / 3:00 PM GMT.
While not part of the official announcement, console players aren’t left out either. There is no free weekend but both games are currently discounted on consoles at 50% off on Xbox and 67% off on the PlayStation Store until April 9.
The timing couldn’t be better as Subnautica 2 is set to enter Early Access in May 2026, making this the perfect opportunity to experience (or revisit) the original before the next chapter arrives.

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google.
