Microsoft quietly updates the Xbox Game Pass Essential library with 14 unannounced titles including classic Rare and Shadowrun games.
- Silent Updates: Xbox Game Pass Essential received unannounced catalog expansions in both May and July without being included in Microsoft’s official monthly updates.
- 14 New Additions: A total of 14 games joined the tier across both drops, including classic Rare titles and the complete Shadowrun trilogy.
- Ongoing Support: While Microsoft has dropped public promotional mentions for this specific tier, the Essential library remains actively maintained.
Xbox Game Pass Essential hasn’t been featured in the company’s monthly Game Pass updates for a while now, yet its library continues to grow behind the scenes. Since its last published update in April, the tier has actually seen 2 more updates in its library.
Xbox Game Pass Essential Continues to Receive New Games
Although Microsoft is consistent with its Wave 1 and Wave 2 announcements for the three main Xbox Game Pass tiers, the same can’t be said for the Essential tier. But while this is the case, its catalog is actually getting updated.
In fact, since the April update which was still publicly detailed, there have been two more game drops. The first arrived in May, adding nine titles, then another refresh landed on July 1 with five more additional games.
As to why Xbox is no longer including these in the standard Xbox Game Pass monthly announcements, no one knows. It’s not ideal but at the end of the day, at least we’re still getting new games in Game Pass’ most basic tier.

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google.
