Square Enix surprise launches native Nintendo Switch 2 versions of Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 with expected visual and performance upgrades.

Update July 14 – Square Enix revealed more information about the Switch 2 launches. The game did in fact release yesterday but only in Japan. Western launch is set for October 1, 2026. Both games deliver improved visuals aiming for 60fps in both docked and handheld modes. Load times were also improved noticeably. Apart from that, not so great news for Switch 1 owners as there is no upgrade path, no save transfer, and it’s at full price at $60 or $75 in a bundle.
Original publication – Square Enix has a surprise for Nintendo fans with the arrival of native Switch 2 versions of the Octopath Traveler 1 and 2. The announcement came during the Octopath Traveler series’ eighth anniversary broadcast where the publisher confirmed both RPGs would be heading to Nintendo’s latest console today. There are still plenty of details missing but players won’t have to wait long to find out more.
Octopath Traveler I and II Arrive on Switch 2 Today
During Octopath’s eighth anniversary livestream, Square Enix officially, but briefly, announced that Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 will be available today on the eShop with their native Switch 2 versions. Though both games are technically already available to play on Nintendo’s latest console, it’s only through backwards compatibility. With a native version, fans are expecting an upgrade on visuals and performance.
Exactly what those improvements include is still unknown. Square Enix has not shared pricing, target frame rates, resolution details, or just a general sense of what players can expect from these native versions. It’s also unclear if an upgrade path will be available or if saved data can be transferred to the new versions. Since both games are scheduled to launch today, more concrete information should become available soon.
